I was on Oahu, Hawaii, of all places, visiting my sister who used to live there. My dad came in with a copy of the SF Chronicle, and I think they all knew to break the news to me gently. I remember feeling shocked, but I was also weirdly unemotional about it at first. They left me alone for a few minutes, and I do believe that a tear came to my eye at one point (which I quickly brushed away).

At some point it dawned on me that the awful show I'd seen at Soldier Field that summer was the last Grateful Dead show EVER; that I had somehow be fortunate enough to see the FINAL Grateful Dead show. I took some solace in that simple fact and went on with my vacation. For years after that I hardly ever listened to the Dead. It just felt like something that I needed to leave behind me.
